Born in 1940 in Bavaria, Germany, renowned stage designer Karl Kneidl looks back at a career of collaborations with directorial icons such as Pina Bausch, Matthias Langhoff, Hans Neuenfels, Heiner Müller, and Peter Zadek. Heller & C is honored being responsible for the design of his latest book GRAMMATIK DER BÜHNE, published in 2025.
Resembling a non-linear diary, the book presents momentous snapshot insights into Kneidl’s work history. Scanning his entire archive of sketch books and transcripts, the originality of Kneidl’s craft becomes tangible through a purposefully raw, non-academic editorial design and a special paper reproducing his material with utmost realistic character. The publication’s cover and format remind of the thickness of a theatre’s wooden floor — a nod to the stage of Kneidl’s oeuvre.
